The following pages will contain a creative piece and critical analysis detailing the history of gender-based discrimination in the alternative music scene. The creative piece Excluded closely follows Malcolm, a punk turned band manager who attempts to mentor an all-girl punk band. Various expectations and hurdles forces Malcolm to retreat to the security of the conventional male line-up. The critical analysis explores male music icons and the role they played in creating environments which place women below men in the music industry. It also recognises the business of music venues and other factors which causes audiences and promoters to shy aware from challenging ideas in favour of money making opportunities.
