Zambrano y la reescritura de Antígona

This paper analyses two important publications by María Zambrano, Delirio de Antígona (1948) y La tumba de Antígona (1967), in the context of the study of writing, not only in reference to Sofocles’ classic (circa 442 a.C.), but also in as far as the latter constitutes a rewriting of the former. In the first place, I address the question of the motivation and aims of this exercise of rewriting in the light of Jungian psychoanalysis, given that, on the one hand, Jung had an important –although little explored- influence on Zambrano’s thought, but also because through the act of rewriting, Zambrano effectively redefined the constitutive archetypes of Antigone’s myth. Second, I will argue that one of the functions of Zambrano’s poetic reason is, precisely, the rewriting of the self insofar as, ultimately, for her, the process of verbalization, writing and rewriting constitute a journey to the inner self as a process of confronting and overcoming the limitations of the self.
