Abstract
Tunable fiber lasers using using erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) and SOA were investigated for their wide wavelength tunable range, and potentially fast tuning speed. The spectral characteristics of lyot filter placed inline with the two amplifiers was also analyzed. The performance of EDFA and SOA was compared in a wavelength tunable fiber ring structure. Wide tuning ranges of 25 nm and 35 nm were achieved with a fiber ring laser using EDFA and SOA respectively. The laser using the SOA showed a broader wavelength tuning range and a stronger red shift to L-band.
