Abstract
The purpose of this practice guide is to help social workers and care managers reflect on the way they carry out assessments with older people, and improve the way they do so, by examining how they can use/make better use of narratives. This guide will:
1. Provide an overview of what we mean by ‘narrative’, its theory, and key features.
2. Describe the broader role of narrative within social work activity.
3. Consider how narrative informs practices that promote engagement, involvement, and person-centred, strength-based approaches with people in later life.
4. Give some practical examples of using narrative within complex assessments and settings to improve outcomes for people in later life.
