The West of Scotland Paediatric Voice Clinic

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaper

The West of Scotland Paediatric Voice clinic was set up at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Glasgow in October 2009. The clinic is staffed by a paediatric ENT consultant and a speech and language therapist. In addition there is collaborative support with the University of Strathclyde through honorary appointment of a research speech and language therapist.
To date, over 300 children have been seen in this assessment clinic. All children are offered full ENT and voice assessment which includes at the very least case history, flexible nasendoscopic evaluation (where tolerated) and voice impact questionnaire. Where possible, voice recordings are taken for acoustic analysis.
In our presentation, we will share with you an outline of the common diagnostic conditions that affect the paediatric caseload. We will also share with you an outline of the past and current research projects that are supported within the clinic. These include development of a minimum protocol for the evaluation of voice disorders in children; development of child versions of the Voice Related Quality of Life Questionnaire and single case studies of novel techniques for improving vocal function in young people who have undergone laryngotracheal reconstruction surgery along with current research studies that are taking place within the service. The team has close working relationships with other paediatric services including the Cleft team and the Community speech and language therapy services and our approaches to comprehensive management of voice disorders across the paediatric caseload will be discussed.
