Abstract
After three electoral victories in a row, but then an extended period of unpopularity, Labour lost power. The Conservatives failed to secure an overall majority for themselves. Together with the Liberal Democrats the Conservatives formed the first peacetime coalition since the 1930s. Instead of being exceptional, coalitions may occur more frequently in future.
