Abstract
Throughout 1986 lines for a takeover battle for Britain's producer of domestic
beet sugar have been drawn and redrawn. The cases of two potential suitors are
currently being examined by the Monopolies and Mergers Commission (MMC). This Perspective examines the background to the fight to control the production of
half of Britain's sugar and looks in particular at its implications for the survival of Greenock's sole remaining cane refinery, Westburn.
