Abstract

The Tabloid Terrorist: The Predicative Construction of New Terrorism in the Media. By Alexander Spencer. Palgrave Macmillan, Basingstoke, 2010, 200 pp., £57.00, ISBN 9780230575585 (hbk)

Much discussion of the representation of post-9/11 terrorism has focused on how terrorism makes use of and depends upon its mediation. While many dwell on the creative use of digital technology by terrorist groups, just as important is the manner in which the activities, character and motivation of the terrorist come to be framed in mainstream media. In an examination of popular newspapers in the UK and Germany, Alexander Spencer provides a timely reminder of the role of the mass media in positioning the terrorist in the news agenda.
