Abstract
This essay provides a historical overview of the Filipinos' fascination with beauty pageants as one of our favourite past times. It also orientates some critical perspectives surrounding the contests, the sociological 'gaze' towards beauty and the need to rethink the issues surrounding women's participation in these events. As a disclaimer, this article was written in 2002 and published through this book in 2003. As such, the format of the competitions, the sponsors, organisers and perspectives among pageant connoisseurs, contestants and cultural studies scholars have also evolved and changed.
