Abstract

THE MYSTERY OF LOVE portrays a very unusual and moving love-story via the pivotal moments in the marriage of Constance Lloyd and Oscar Wilde—a life that starts off as an adventure and ends in a domestic arrangement as complicated as the lies Constance and Oscar tell themselves and each other.

At first there is a public Oscar and a private one and Constance is the only one who gets to glimpse the latter. For this is really her story, and her telling of the courtship alone will be revelation to those stuck on the myth. The romance is bracing, exuberant; and this—free from aphorising—Oscar starts out diffident as she is in control. Only then, as they explore the complex territory of child-rearing, does Constance become aware that any happiness she has attained is different from the happiness of which she’s dreamed.

You could call this a tragic story but, since Constance and Oscar stay alive in each other's hearts until the very end, it doesn’t play that way at all. At its heart, THE MYSTERY OF LOVE is a universal story of intimacy and mercy, packing a powerful emotional punch in its depiction of the helpless feeling of being estranged from the one with whom you feel you truly belong.
