Abstract

Estimates suggest that about 90% of the languages used in the world today are, to a greater or lesser extent, endangered and at risk of disappearing. Initiatives to support endangered languages, both top-down and bottom-up, have focussed on preservation through documentation, and on creating mechanisms for language acquisition. The latter can involve support of the endangered language as the language of the home, but now more frequently refers to the creation of new speakers, adults and young people who learn through formal or informal education. Resources are needed to support documentation and acquisition require resources. The creation of agreed orthographies, grammars and vocabularies is important, but so too is awareness of languages and their culture.
