Abstract
This chapter discusses the extent to which sub-national island jurisdictions (SNIJs) can rely on the UN Biodiversity Convention to become more resilient and sustainable. The chapter focuses on the Åland Islands in Finland as an example of an SNIJ that has developed a sustainability agenda that promotes resilience and includes biodiversity protection. The Åland Islands provide an example of how international legal processes and agreed objectives, such as the SDGs and to a lesser extent the CBD, can be incorporated into and drive forward resilience and sustainability agendas that include biodiversity protection and take bottom-up approaches.
