Abstract

Wind diesel hybrid systems are isolated systems that combine diesel generators with wind turbine generators to reduce the fuel consumption. Substantial fuel savings are only possible if the system is capable of working with the diesel generators not running (Wind Only mode). This increases the control complexity and requires additional equipment. When the wind power is not available, the diesel generator must supply the needed power to the system. In order to reduce the number of start-stop cycles in the diesel generators a short-term energy storage system is necessary. Batteries are very important in wind diesel hybrid systems since they are the main choice for mid-term energy storage. This paper analyzes the different options for the case of batteries as short-term energy storage. The battery based energy storage system uses a three-phase bridge connected to the isolated grid that follows the necessary power references. Finally, the proposed battery based energy storage system, along with a wind diesel hybrid system, is simulated in Wind Only mode.
