Stochastic seismic response analysis of adjacent buildings coupled by nonlinear viscous dampers

Abstract

This paper analyses the seismic response of adjacent buildings connected by nonlinear viscous dampers under stochastic base acceleration. The adjacent buildings are modelled as linear elastic multi-degree-of-freedom systems, and the nonlinearity is concentrated in the connecting dampers. A stochastic linearization technique is employed to estimate the stochastic response of the system while accounting for the dampers' nonlinear behaviour. A case study consisting of two adjacent buildings with shear-type behaviour connected by linear or nonlinear viscous dampers is analysed. The performance of the dampers is investigated by considering different response parameters including inter-storey drifts, floor displacements, and floor accelerations of the adjacent structures, as well as dampers' forces. Numerical simulations of the system response are also carried out to evaluate the accuracy of the statistical linearization technique employed in this study.
