Abstract
Opportunities for socialization are critical for breakout success in business. In this paper, we document that business owners from stigmatized communities, specifically Dalits in India, are less successful in business - measured as belonging in the top 5 percentile of businesses by income - even if they have a similar socioeconomic background to other business owners. Such a gap in business success does not exist for other underrepresented and socially disadvantaged communities, like Adivasis and Muslims, that do not face stigma. We document that this gap is accentuated in more relational industries
