Some thoughts on the effect of elastic rebounds on the boundaries of the aqueous erosion-corrosion map

Abstract

Although there have been many attempts at the development of models of solid particle erosion at both oblique and normal impact, there have been few attempts to extend this work to low velocities. This is despite the fact that in many practical situations, erosion occurs at low velocities, i.e., less than 3 ms(-1). Such processes include pipe flow conditions and in fluidized bed combustion in coal conversion systems. The object of this work was to evaluate elastic effects as predicted by various models in the literature. Such effects on the boundaries of the aqueous erosion-corrosion map were assessed. Comparisons with experimental results were also made. The results showed that there was a wide variation between the elasticity predictions of various models. The implications of such trends for modelling erosion-corrosion in low velocity conditions are discussed. Suggestions for future work in this area are also addressed.
