Abstract
Even when operated with a spectral dispersive resonant cavity the CO laser is frequently found to have a multi-component line structure. This structure greatly reduces the utility of such lasers for spectroscopy, optical pumping and other applications. This paper explains why the CO laser operates with this complicated line structure and how genuine single line operation can be made possible. The successful operation of such a laser is reported.
