    Abstract

During the Great War many elementary schoolteachers volunteered. Some were outstanding sportsmen. The search for these ‘insignificant' men has only just begun. Rescued from Obscurity is a tribute to and an as yet far from complete record of these forgotten of the conflict, trained in denominational and non-denominational colleges and inculcated in both with a period belief in the moral qualities allegedly inherent in games playing. Within the college system, incidentally, not all were loyal to the crown. Some had a different allegiance, a fact that to date has received virtually no attention.
