This paper explores the current knowledge surrounding mixing methods based on a review of the extant literature. This review covers both theoretically and practically focussed papers. The theoretically focussed papers are initially reviewed to gain an understanding of how researchers believe methods should be mixed and what constitutes mixing methods. This foci is then used to inform an analysis of the practically focussed (i.e. case oriented) papers. The purpose of this analysis is to determine commonalities and differences, and whether there are any insights and lessons that can be deduced. The paper will conclude by suggesting future directions for mixing methods practice.
