Abstract

Oral administration is the preferred route for delivery of medicines in all populations. However, this route relies on absorption from the gastrointestinal tract. Gastrointestinal development is rapid following birth with signifi cant changes during development, particularly following weaning, which can infl uence the absorption of drugs. An understanding of anatomical and physiological differences in the gastrointestinal tract in paediatric populations is required to understand drug absorption following oral administration.
