Overcurrent and overvoltage testing of a multifunctional superconducting coil

Superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been extensively applied for many application in electrical grids. In this paper, the overcurrent and overvoltage characteristics of a pancake-structured SFCL module are tested and evaluated. First, a single superconducting (SC) tape is tested for critical current and room temperature resistance. Then, a pancake coil is developed using the considered tape with a proper length to exhibit a resistance of 3 . This resistance value was found effective by many researchers with either AC or DC systems. After winding the coil, its critical current is reevaluated and its inductance is measured at cryogenic temperature. The overcurrent test is done at different cases of supply voltage until the prospective current attained about four times of coil critical current. The prospective current and limited was measured for each case. Based on the results, it could be discriminated between inductive limit and resistive limit of the coil. The overvoltage test is done on a SC tape sample to assess the surface flashover withstand voltage and compare it to the maximum allowed electric field along the coil length. The flashover results are analyzed statistically using Weibull analysis.
