Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to revolutionise mental health practices and research over the coming decade, offering innovative solutions to longstanding challenges in the field. Despite these advancements, mental health stigma and inequalities remain pervasive and critical issues worldwide, imposing substantial costs on individuals, communities, and societies. This talk explores the dual role of AI as both a potential mitigator of and contributor to mental health disparities. It examines how AI can enhance early detection, personalise treatment, and increase the accessibility of mental health care, particularly for underserved populations. However, it also addresses the risks associated with AI, including biases in algorithms and the potential exacerbation of existing inequalities. Emphasising the importance of socio-cultural factors, the co-creation of AI-driven mental health solutions with key stakeholders, including clinicians, patients, and communities, is advocated. The talk will draw upon an example of developing a co-created solution, Sentinel, for the management and prevention of trauma with first responders. It is argued that engaging citizens in the development process is crucial to ensure these technologies are ethical, effective, and equitable.
