Optical bistability and nonlinear switching in 1550 nm VCSOAs

Abstract

This paper deals with the nonlinear optical behaviour of 1550 nm vertical cavity semiconductor optical amplifiers (VCSOAs). Recent progress in studies of nonlinear gain, optical bistability and two-wavelength switching is reviewed. Functionality in the parameter space of optical power, frequency and polarisation is demonstrated experimentally and confirmed by theoretical calculations. Potential applications are foreseen in all-optical signal processing and optical switching/routing.
