New challenges and priorities for regional development policy in Europe

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaper

Abstract

Dr Ferry’s presentation will give an overview of current regional policy trends in the European Union. This includes trends in domestic frameworks and strategies that are responding to increased interest in interpersonal and interregional inequality arising from the ongoing impact of the financial/economic crisis of 2008-09 as well as preparations for the post-2020 period of the European Union’s main regional policy instrument (Cohesion policy). In this context, this presentation provides a comparative review of the regional development policies in the EU. This will include a brief analysis of regional disparities in Europe, focusing on reasons for shifts in disparities and an outline of trends and drivers of change in regional policies in Europe, focusing on the geographical focus, instruments, funding and institutional frameworks of regional policy. The implications these trends have for the private sector will be briefly reviewed.
