Abstract

The shipping industry has been under pressure to improve its environmental impact leading to the accelerated development of alternative zero-carbon fuels. Ammonia-powered Solid Oxide Fuel Cell systems are proposed as a prominent solution that can tackle these environmental challenges. However, there are safety and reliability concerns that need to be addressed when introducing a new fuel and propulsion system. For this purpose, the main hazards and the critical components of an
ammonia-powered fuel cell system are identified, as initial steps towards the safety assessment of the system.
