A range of sterilization methods used in male and female mammals are reviewed, comparing those used in humans and animals. It includes permanent surgical methods and the desire for reversible and non-surgical methods, depending on the application. Steroidal and non-steroidal drugs are considered, as well as hormonal and gamete-based targets, focusing on immunocastration as an alternative to drugs. Continuing pre-clinical developments indicate that this field is still active, despite the pharmaceutical industry moving away from funding this type of research.
