Abstract

Safe and secure operation of power grids highly relies on measurement technologies, which enable accurate visibility of the systems and allows monitoring, protection and control functions to be performed. With the rapid increase of renewable generation, the system becomes more volatile and complex, which presents even more compelling needs for advanced measurement technologies to enable novel solutions to accommodate renewable integration. Along with the grid modernization, the measurement technologies have also significantly evolved over the past decades. In this article, an overview of the available instrumentation technologies for power system operation is presented, followed by discussions on the applicability of these technologies for various power system applications.
