N2 - Low-frequency oscillations (LFOs) are one of the important stability problems of power systems; they may result in instability and even lead to blackouts. A wide-area damping controller (WADC) is an effective way to suppress such oscillation. Compared with the model-based WADC design, measurement-based approaches do not require an accurate mathematical model of the power system and adapt to varying operating points. However, measurement-based ones suffer from noise and data dropout. To tackle the data dropout problems in real applications, a fault-tolerant adaptive extended Kalman filter (FTAEKF)-based oscillation mode detection and WADC design is proposed. Using the collected ring-down measurements and a measurement-driven approach, the power system transfer function model is estimated to capture the system’s oscillatory behavior. Then, the parameters of the WADC are updated online based on the estimated residual angle of the transfer function model to track the variations of the oscillation mode caused by the change of system operating points. This approach doesn’t require a precise mathematical model of the power system and can deal with data dropout in measurements. The effectiveness of the proposed WADC is verified in the simulation study on the 2-area 4-machine power system, considering 10% data dropout using FTAEKF. However, the conventional EKF method cannot solve the data dropout issue.
