Abstract

The development of Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) was governed by the following constraint: 'To face the challenges of the 21st century, each young person needs to have confidence in using mathematical skills, and Scotland needs both specialist mathematicians and a highly numerate population' (Scottish Executive, 2006). With CfE well established in secondary schools, this chapter considers central aspects of mathematics provision, aiming to identify the ongoing challenges facing secondary mathematics education.
