Magnetic and microwave absorption properties of carbon fibers coated by Fe3O4 nanoparticles

Abstract

Fe3O4 nanoparticles were coated on carbon fibers (CFs) using an electro-deposition technique from Fe (III)-tri-ethanol-amine complex in an aqueous alkaline solution at 60-80◦ C. A correlation between magnetic and absorption properties of specimens were made. It was found that the deposition time has a significant impact on the reflection loss characteristics of the coatings. On the other hand, the temperature of the coating process affects strongly the composition of the thin film. The morphology, crystallized phases, magnetic and absorption properties of the layer were characterized by SEM, XRD, Permagraph and VNA, respectively. The highest reflection loss was found to be− 10 dB at 12.27 GHz when the deposition time was 4 min.
