Made2Verify: a scalable GS1-compliant resolver and fallback dashboard for digital product passports

Abstract

In the transition towards a circular economy, Digital Product Passports (DPPs) provide essential product information throughout extended lifecycles. However, maintaining data accessibility faces significant challenges when companies change or cease operations. This paper introduces Made2Verify, a novel resolver and fallback dashboard architecture that serves as a critical intermediary between physical product identifiers (QR codes, NFC tags) and DPP data repositories. Rather than embedding data directly or linking to static endpoints, Made2Verify implements a dynamic redirection mechanism based on GS1 standards that intelligently routes users to appropriate data sources based on product lifecycle stage, authentication requirements, and endpoint availability. The resolver offers key innovations: lifecycle-aware redirection that adapts access as products transition from design through production to market, and integrated fallback capabilities that preserve essential information when manufacturers cease operations. Implementation with an Open Reference Remanufacture Part (ORRP) in a lab and production environment validated the resolver's ability to maintain consistent data accessibility despite organisational and infrastructure changes. This functional demonstration indicates the potential of the approach to enhance DPP longevity and accessibility—addressing a critical gap between physical products and their DPPs, ensuring information remains intact throughout extended lifecycles, with fallback capabilities ensuring consumer accessible data persists beyond OEM discontinuities.
