Abstract

In this rich and detailed study of interdisciplinary nature, the British historian Philip Cooke examines the enduring legacy of the Resistance and was countered by rebuilding the changing and ambivalent attitudes developed by the main political parties and the institutions of the Republic during their ambitious plan for building a new nation on the ruins of fascism and the Second World War.

Using novels, films, documentaries, newspapers, diaries, monuments, paintings, museums, the author illustrates the ways in which, over a long period of time, politics, history and culture Italian interacted among themselves, it calls into question stereotypes "biased", like Communist hegemony on memory, and re-read the history of the Second World War from a new perspective and innovative, that imprescindible become a reference point for anyone who wants to reflect on the strength and with it the entire history of 'Italian contemporary.
