Abstract

By focussing a laser beam on a small gas bubble in a liquid, the entrance and exit spot on the bubble surface behave as spherical mirrors. From an interferometric analysis of the reflected beams, the volume and capillary oscillation modes of the bubble surface can be characterized in detail. In the present study, an interferometer for the characterization with sub-Angstrom sensitivity of the electrically excited oscillation modes of a gas bubble in a liquid is described. Data on instrument performance and on the determination of gas-liquid interface elastic properties is presented and discussed.
