The process of ion exchange is one of the most utilized techniques in water and wastewater treatment as well as in separation processes as chemical synthesis, medical research, food processing, mining, agriculture, etc. In the first section of the present chapter the kinetics and thermodynamics of ion exchange are presented. Also, the basic principles of fixed and fluidized beds systems and their application in ion exchange process are presented. The application of the ion exchange is constantly developed along with the development of the worldwide economy branches. Thus, starting from natural and synthetic inorganic materials such as zeolites, clay minerals, and permutites, a great variety of organic materials like synthetic resins, polysaccharides (cellulose), proteins (casein, keratin, and collagen), and carbonic materials are obtained and can be used in wastewater treatment. These materials are described in the second section of the present chapter. Apart from the ion exchange materials, the natural zeolites deserve mention due to their advantages as efficient materials of a low price. The information in the last section of this chapter is focused on the environmental and production processes where the natural and synthetic inorganic materials were studied and used.
