Other | “Times of Crisis, Times of Change: Human Stories on the Edge of Transformation.” Focusing on the themes of civil rights, human rights, immigration, and LGBT history, this year’s conference marks the 50th anniversary of the Atlanta Student Movement, the founding of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Keynote speakers include award-winning journalist, Maria Hinojosa, and Black Freedom Movement veterans, Connie Curry, Lonnie King, Bernard LaFayette, Jr., and Judy Richardson. The conference opens on Wednesday evening with film, songs, and recollections of the Depression Era and the Federal Writers’ Project of the 1930s. Three plenary sessions focus on Katrina, present day immigration, and oral history in LGBT communities. The Presidential Reception, in the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum, includes a memorial tribute to Brother Blue. Also featured are New Book Spotlights on some of the most vibrant examples of growth in the field of oral history. |
