Abstract

This chapter reviews the most significant observations which have already been made concerning the physiology of immobilised cells. The initial section briefly describes the various categories of immobilised cell preparations with reference to viability status and physiological condition. Thereafter aspects of cell physiology are discussed in relation to the importance of the precultivation stage, effects on cells of the various immobilisation methods, and finally, effects on cells in response to the novel environments created on or within carrier materials.
