Abstract

The January issue of the Journal of Chemical Education is a special issue focused on safety. This issue contains 38 submissions that cover a variety of safety topics. There are papers on basic resources related to RAMP, recognize hazards, assess the risks, minimize the risks, and prepare for emergencies and safety guidelines. There are papers on approaches to instruction, demonstration safety, examples of lessons or instruction topics, including safety as part of current instruction, and a variety of case studies. The issue includes several papers on the use of near misses and chemical incident investigations as a base for teaching chemical safety as well as changing the safety culture in academic departments. The synergy between green chemistry and chemical safety is highlighted in three articles and a laboratory experiment. The special issue has papers that focus on K–12, community colleges, and research institutions. Additionally, there are papers that look at innovative projects from China, Nigeria, Denmark, Argentina, and the United States. Hopefully, the safety and education communities will find this issue a valuable safety resource.
