    Abstract

GRADIENT is a five year research project funded by the EEC under the ESPRIT programme. GRADIENT has adopted two main aims: to investigate the use of knowledge-based systems to support the operator of industrial process supervision and control systems; and to enable the operator to conduct an intelligent graphical dialogue with the S & C System, supported by graphical expert systems. Extensions are implemented to the conventional S & C system to demonstrate the basic principles of a graphical dialogue environment.
