Abstract
Tourism relies intrinsically on those who work directly in, or impart influence on, it¹s various sectors. Notwithstanding the impact of technology and technology substitution within the workplace, tourism organisations depend largely on the labour-intensive inputs of their workforce. Consequently, tourism jobs which, to varying degrees, depend on location and the nature of the business, have an important role to play in driving economic and employment growth. Yet this paper contends, that workforce research is a neglected research domain, and argues the case for more time and effort to be placed on workforce research, identifies some of the challenges, and provides some initial suggestions as to a way forward.
