Abstract
The ability to control the spatio-temporal dynamics of a multi transverse mode laser has been studied numerically. This ability can be useful for obtaining a stable output without losing power as well as pattern selection for information processing purposes. The diffractive Maxwell-Bloch equations for a single longitudinal ring cavity laser was used and the electric field variables were projected onto a finite set of Gaussian-Laguerre modes. Chaotic behavior was observed resulting in complex dynamical beam profiles. Control of the spatio-temporal dynamics was achieved by using both incoherent and coherent control techniques.
