Abstract

This paper introduces a fault detection technique that assists the fault locating activity in the fault location, isolation and service restoration (FLISR) system by using a current-only directional method based on the exchange of very simple coded messages that explain the changes in angles of current from pre- to during-fault conditions. With the support of commercially available communications, it is shown that the proposed algorithm can assist the FLISR perform its duty effectively in future situations that are challenging to traditional overcurrent protection techniques.
