Abstract

This Report summarises findings from the interdisciplinary research programme, Plastics in Indonesian Societies (PISCES), supported by a UK Research and Innovation, Global Challenges Research Fund grant.

The Programme is designed to address the growing risks of plastic pollution in Indonesia through systems-based evidence and actionable policy pathways. Its goal is to catalyse Indonesia’s National Action Plan to support system change under a circular economy framework.


The report’s recommendations are based on a four-year research programme led by Brunel University of London and its Indonesian partners. Backed by UK Research and Innovation’s Global Challenges Research Fund, The PISCES project (Plastics in Indonesian Societies), examined how plastic is used, managed, and discarded across communities. Its findings will inform Indonesia’s National Plan of Action, expected to launch in 2026.

UNAIR’s participation in this consortium highlights the contribution of Indonesian universities to tackling global challenges. By strengthening social research, UNAIR not only enriches international academic literature but also plays an active role in driving social transformation toward more sustainable plastic management.
