Abstract

The present paper presents the current legislative aspects on the sewage sludge management in European Union. Following the trends in environmental legislation the last 30 years sewage sludge management is regulated, directly and indirectly by different legislative tools and acts. Although the positive steps, there is the need for continuous improvement and more intense enforcement. The major gaps identified are the need for limits setting for organic substances and regulations on recycling and final disposal.
