Abstract
This chapter explores the ethics of volunteering in tourism as a guest. To this end, it introduces international volunteering and its key trends and criticisms before turning its attention to volunteer tourism. After providing an outline of its key drivers and some ethical dilemmas, the chapter proceeds to delve into ethical theory to deliver a snapshot of volunteering’s ethical philosophy. This journey draws on normative ethics and enlightened self-interest before shifting its focus on volunteering as a commodity driven by the symbolism of the act of volunteering before recognising volunteering as an extraordinary time and space where the ethical self and the ethics of the heart come together
