Abstract

Measurement and verification (M&V) is the most critical component in any project where energy-efficiency needs to be calculated. South Africa is seen as a world leader in M&V.
An informative book titled Energy-Efficiency Measurement & Verification Practices: Demystifying M&V through South African Case Studies will be launched at the 7th Southern African Energy-Efficiency Convention 2012 (2012SAEEC), which will be held on 14 November 2012 in the M&V Breakaway Session at Emperors Palace, Gauteng.
When performed in accordance with the SANS 50 010 standard and inspected by an independent registered inspection body, M&V ensures that there is no conflict of interest between project developers and the relevant client, and provides maximum credibility and transparency of energy savings reported.
South Africa has over a decade of hands-on experience in developing the M&V market for the industry, and this experience has been successfully captured in the format of a reference book. The publication features a collection of 32 papers on various energy-efficiency M&V projects in a wide range of industries, from building, lighting systems and refrigeration systems to cooling auxiliaries, heat pumps, air-conditioners, residential load management, solar water heaters, and awareness raising and behaviour changes.
The case studies in the papers cover project sites in residential homes, commercial buildings, mines, supermarkets, power plants and more. Most of these case studies focus on the discussion of M&V methodologies, as well as actual project information on state-of-the-art M&V modelling techniques which contain the baseline establishment, independent variable determination, baseline adjustment, metering plan design and savings calculations for various types of energy-efficiency projects.
Within the context of the developmental role played by municipalities and other relevant companies in the industry, and through advocating sustainable energy usage, M&V services can assist Energy and Electricity divisions on a number of energy efficiency and demand side management projects in support of the Department of Energy’s national strategic objective of optimising energy usage.
