Education and culture are the key concepts in contemporary discourses. Whether it is political debates, public debate, or professional disputes in pedagogy, the two terms are always regarded as an anchor point or as a perspective, not infrequently as an expression of a promise, especially of inhumanity, in human relations and relationships . But what do the conceptions mean, what does the conceptual pair stand for? As the first volume in the series Education and Culture, the focus on relations is the self-understanding of the Institute for Education and Culture of the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena. In five essays, an attempt at clarification and foundation is made by developing an understanding of education and culture that preserves the openness of the concepts and at the same time contours them to avoid arbitrariness.
