Dose-dependent feeding in the rat following substantia nigra acetylcholinesterase blockade

Abstract

Microinjections of eserine sulphate into the substantia nigra elicited a dose-dependent increase in feeding, but not drinking, when both food and water were freely available. This response is strikingly similar to that elicited by other forms of cholinergic stimulation of the rat substantia nigra. It is suggested that nigro-striatal dopamine neurones might receive a cholinergic input within substantia nigra and play an important role in mediating this response.
