Disciplinary excellence and inclusion, can these two divergent aims ever be reconciled?

Research output: Contribution to conferencePresentation/Speechpeer-review

Abstract

This session will consider the perceived tensions between inclusion of diverse learners and the aspirations to promote rigorous science education and assessment. It will look at evidence on the views of student/ trainee teachers on the difficulties they experience in reconciling the two aims. The situation created by the policy landscape in Scotland will be analysed and the presentation will also consider the equivalent situation in England and Wales. Approaches that may help to ‘bridge the (apparent) gap’ will be presented and examples of successful science work underpinned by such approaches will be shared.
