N2 - A device for prediction of imminence of onset of labour and a method for using the device are described. The device is a portable assembly of: a plurality of recording electrodes and optionally a reference electrode, each electrode comprising a contact surface for application to a subject; a means for data acquisition; a data analysing means to process the data to determine a result indicative of the electromyographic readings of the subject and a display adapted to display this result. It is characterised in that the data analysing means comprises a means adapted to produce a result indicative an electromyographic parameter known to vary cyclically in the period preceding labour, a data register to store previous results, and a data comparator to compare a currently generated result with previous results and thereby to identify a peak in the said parameter.
