Abstract

In October 2008, as part of a wider evaluation of its 'Inspire & Challenge' CPD programme, Glasgow Science Centre (GSC) commissioned the Department of Childhood and Primary Studies within the Faculty of Education, University of Strathclyde, to devise and conduct a small-scale evaluative research study regarding the programme's relative success in improving primary teacher confidence to approaching science. To this end, the development and utilisation of research instruments drawing form work on practitioner attitude in primary science by writers such as Watters & Ginns (1996), Howitt (2007) and that of cognitive psychology informed by Zimmermann (1999) was progressed. Additionally, the study also utilised interview with current local education authority Quality Improvement Officers as part of its validation procedure. The study was conducted from mid-January to mid-February 2009, with full draft data analysis submitted to GSC in early March 2009.
